This is a very simple recipe I got from my friend Shara oh-so long ago for making a play dough that can be saved in an air tight container for quite a few days after. Get out your cookie cutters, rolling pins, wooden boards and blunt knives and let the kiddies knock their socks off.
Dry materials:
2 c. flour
1 c salt
2 Tbsp cream of tartar
Wet materials:
2 c hot water (maybe a bit more)
1 Tbsp oil (mineral or veg)
food coloring
Method:
Mix the dry ingredients together and then add the wet. Now cook over medium heat in a heavy pot, for just a couple minutes, stirring constantly until it firms up. Keep in covered container or ziploc bag after it cools.
*Food coloring can be added with the wet ingredients or later, after play dough is split into pieces.

Another plus for this is if the kids eat it, no problem. I used to eat the mint flavored paste in kindergarten, it was sooooooooo good. Probably not too good for me, but I'm sure the mint prevented a tummy ache.
my "kid" did eat it for fun -- it doesn't taste too nice...apparently.
That's why you need to put a little sugar and mint flavoring in it!
