Kids enjoy making rubbings. Manhole covers can be really interesting subjects, but a bit dangerous depending on traffic. And graveyards offer the perfect environment (especially the family crests, "mon," in Japan)!
Get various kinds of paper to experiment and use fat crayola crayons (doesn't work too well on very hot days).
Don't go over the cover only once, hold the paper on and use several colors. You can also put several rubbings on one sheet to make mandalas or scrolls.
Bring your rubbing inside and work it in using colored pencils and magic markers, like the one shown here!
